A non-alloy steel is treated to provide a good keying surface for a solid polymeric or wax coating by heat treatment at 550 to 720 deg C for up to 4 hours in an atmosphere of, eg ammonia and endothermic or exothermic gas, followed by cooling to produce an epsilon iron nitride surface layer. The solid coating adheres tenaciously to the surface layer to give excellent salt spray resistance.

This invention relates to methods for coating a metal substrate to a coating.
The aim of the invention is to increase the corrosion resistance of products.
The method is carried out as follows.
Example. The processed products are subjected to carbonitriding at 550–660 ° C for an hour in an atmosphere of ammonia and an endothermic gas mixture. A layer of epsilon-iron nitride with a thickness of 15-25 microns is formed. Thereafter, cooling is carried out in a non-oxidizing environment and a solid organic coating is applied to the nitro-cemented product. The cooling is carried out by quenching in oil or by slow cooling in a nitrocentizing atmosphere. After quenching in oil, the product is degreased and heated to remove moisture.
Corrosion resistance of the products processed by the proposed and known methods is presented in the table.

The method of coating non-alloy steel products, including heating and hardening in a nitro-cementing gaseous medium to form epsilon-iron nitride, cooling and applying a solid organic protective coating, is characterized in that, in order to increase the corrosion resistance of products, cooling carried out in a non-oxidizing environment.
